Names of universities

[edit]

I have changed the "University of Galway" to "National University of Ireland, Galway" to reflect its official title. In retrospect instead of the template having official names it may be better to use the city name only, with the link pointing to the university, eg Galway ? This will create problems where their are several universities in a city! Djegan 20:03, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

How about we write NUI, Galway? To me the "Nat'l University of Ireland, Galway" is a bit too long.Sky 17:53, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
That solves the problem for "NUI, Galway" but not for the other universities, and leaves them all rather long by quoting official names, most are in the form "University of...". It might be an idea to use the city name as I proposed (eg [[National University of Ireland, Galway|Galway]], Galway), as long as the city name points to the target university then it should not cause a problem, even if a city has two universities. Repeating the words "University of..." almost 40 times seams excessive, after all the template is essentially a shortcut and does not need to be list of official university names? I changed it to the cities' names. Sky 10:57, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I object to the term "leading universities" in the template. I don't think that the Groningen university is much better than the average university here in the Netherlands. Andries 08:22, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Well, it has been chosen to be part of the group. Besides, it is the oldest research university in the Netherlands, dating back to 1614. Your subjective judgement may not be totally wrong, but I think we should definitely keep the "leading" Sky 14:38, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It is not just subjective. I have read about comparisons in newspapers about universtities and as far as I remember, have never heard that the Groningen uni excels. May be some faculties are better than others but some are worse. My memory may play tricks on me, I have to admit. Andries 19:06, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
It appears to be "reputable" know. This seems even worse as it appears to suggest that the many many good research universities not on this list are disreputable! Pcb21| Pete 15:22, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
