[edit]Martinez was the first Hispanic American elected governor of Florida despite the large Hispanic population of the state.
I really don't feel this sentence is relevant. I mean, the Hispanic population of the state didn't get large until the 1960s, so 1987 would have been fairly quick. Mike H 18:23, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)
- The major point is, I suppose, that he is an Hispanic American governor. There have only been a handful nationally, ever, and I would believe that New Mexico has had the most.

[edit]I have placed some citations demonstrating that Martinez did push through the STS. Confusion may be caused by references to the "1986 legislature" passing the bill, but in Florida legislatures are named by the year in which they are elected, not served. Unschool 00:26, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
martinez's heritage
[edit]The precise Hispanic heritage of people from Ybor City is sometimes unclear, as many Spanish immigrants stopped to work in Cuba before moving on to Tampa. For example, some of my great-grandparents considered themselves Spanish and others Cuban although they each lived in Cuba for only a short time. To further muddy the waters for Martinez, his official City of Tampa bio says that his mother's maiden name was "Cerrano", which is a common Italian name in these parts.
The only way to definitely put Martinez in a category is find an article somewhere in which he addresses the issue. I've actually met him a time or two and could probably get in touch, but would that violate the sometimes-ridiculous "orginal research" rule? Zeng8r (talk) 00:14, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes. But, if he blogs, ask him to comment on this matter on the blog, then reference the blog. Or give him Jimmy Wales' email address and ask him to email Jimmy, who can vouch that the email did indeed come from Martinez. Jimmy would then pass the info on to WP.
