This needs to be updated to include info on linking to Wikimedia Commons. (I came here looking for info; I know about {{pic}}, but am looking for the code for linking directly to a commons page at a different title than the en: one.) -- Infrogmation 17:02, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

It's unfortuate that MediaWiki neither provides a good method of creating interwiki links nor provides an interwiki link for meta. Sigh.

Interwiki redirects

Cross-wiki redirects? Do we have any guidelines on this?

Recommended use of Wiktionary

The article suggests putting links to other Wikis (including Wicktionary) either in see also or External links sections. However, it seems the most appropriate use of Wiktionary would be to embed the link directly in the article at the point of use of an uncertain word. Comments? --Blainster 20:35, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My practice is to put Wiktionary and Wikisource links right at the top of the article if they correspond exactly to the subject matter of the article, especially on disambig pages. See for example HMS Pinafore, Rod. If the link pertains to one specific section, put the link in that section; see for example 2004 Democratic National Convention#Keynote address.

If the link pertains only indirectly to the article, which IMHO applies to all Wikiquote links (though I could be persuaded otherwise), it should go to the bottom. In particular, it should go at the bottom if it is less relevant than the article text; see for example The Netherlands. Who would want to look up "The Netherlands" in a dictionary when they had an encyclopedic treatment in front of them? In contrast, the original text of HMS Pinafore is more relevant to the entry title "HMS Pinafore" than any synopsis, and a dictionary treatment of the word "rod" is more useful than a Wikipedia dab page.

IMO, Wiktionary links should not be used simply to link unfamiliar words to their definitions. If the reader doesn't understand some term, and there's no Wikipedia article on it, then let him look it up himself! For example, this kind of "periwinkle link" is obfuscatory, because as you can('t) see, it's impossible to tell whether it links to a real definition or to "Edit this page" exhortations. Use big words freely, I say. (I do link the occasional word to Wiktionary in Wikisource texts, but it doesn't seem appropriate in Wikipedia entries.)
