Coromandel Also a type of Ebony. Richly prized for its golden veining in the dark brown or near black heart wood. Used by Victorian carpenters for exotic furniture and jewelry boxes of all types. Pieces large enough to make items as large as sideboards, cupboards and occasional tables were rare. The trees were found on the Coromandel coast in East India and along the coastal regions of the Andaman Sea. Regrettably lumbered to extinction around the beginning of the 20th century.
Alternatives today, though much inferior in grain and colour is Macassar Ebony or Golden Ebony.
