Article created
[edit]I've started this article on the Hippos. I will post a link to the article in any discussion forums that still exist. I hope that some people from there, or maybe others on Wikipedia will be able to recall information about the Hippos that I have forgotten, as their home page no longer exists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.233.193 (talk • contribs) 00:41, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
- I rewrote it a bit with a more detailed history & some headers. I used to frequent their homepage too & I have the albums to work off of. --IllaZilla2 21:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Liner Notes Publicly Available?
[edit]The source of information I've used are the liner notes from each full length release so far. Is that material copyrighted or is it permissible to use portions of it here? How should they be cited? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.233.193 (talk • contribs) 00:56, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
- I believe you can use the information from album liner notes without any issues. Unless you're quoting a significant bit of text, like some comment written into the notes by the band, which would require citation. General info such as performers, recording details, etc. probably doesn't need to be cited, but is most helpful in the album articles themselves rather than here. --IllaZilla2 21:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Horns essential?
[edit]Horns, although common, are not an "essential" element of ska. The main thing that makes something ska is the rhythm. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.150.76.4 (talk • contribs) 16:22, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- I would say this is a matter of preference & taste. I think classifying the Hippos in general as a rock band & then describing their transition from ska to pop/synthpop with links to the articles on each genre is appropriate. A lot of bands change their styles over the years, it's not necessary to peg them down with a specific genre. Describing their evolution with links to the appropriate genre articles is the best way to go. --IllaZilla2 21:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
why redlinks?
[edit]IllaZilla reverted my (re)addition of a redlink to this article with an editsummary stating: "why exactly do we need this red link?"
Per WP:REDLINK, redlinks are encouraged when it is likely that it would lead to a potentially notable wiki entry. This seems to be the case with Olympic Records; it doesn't exist now, but easily could exist in the future. Again, per WP:REDLINK, "Good red links help Wikipedia." tedder (talk) 21:55, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- The likelihood of its existing in the future is questionable, based on the fact that the redlink has been in the article for over 2 years & no article on the label has materialized. I should know, I'm the one who added it originally (under my old account). I certainly don't have any intention of creating an article on Olympic Records, since all I know about them is that they released The Hippos. When a redlink has been around for over 2 years & no article has materialized, I think it's safe for us to remove that link. If someone chooses to create an article on Olympic Records in the future, they can always come back to this article & wikilink it. --IllaZilla (talk) 22:19, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- I won't oppose it if you want to remove it again. However, there's no real timeline to issues like this. tedder (talk) 00:31, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
