Reopro

I recently had a severe case of Abciximab induced thrombocytopenia. It kept me in intensive care for 4 days while they put 4 bags of plastelets into me and waited for it's half life to expire. It came on fast and we were VERY lucky to catch it in time. Williamb 13:07, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I was trolling around on the internet and a Canadian article said there was one death associated with it from internal bleeding. My platelet count had gotten low enough that I wasn't clotting anymore and blood blisters were forming everywhere in my mouth. I also had petecchii from head to toe. They had never actually had a ReoPro reaction before at OHSU so they almost didn't catch it. because I was in so much pain from the stent proceedure that I was doped to the max on morphine and couldn't really tell them anything.

Yes I am back, but still a little busy this week. I might be returning to the UK within the next three months if I can find employment back there before I arrive. My wife & baby have a terrible erticaria because of pollution or something in the water here so we cannot stay long it seems. It just seemed to me that the whole Nazarene business has to be sorted out once and for all. I did my best to gather some objective info on the subject mostly available online. I think Nazarene should become a disambiguation page and the relevant info from there merged with the article. There are still some sources I need to check out though. At least the three original terms which merged into Nazarene have been exposed. I still can't find much out about the 135CE changes and this "Bishop Marcus" though. I'm a little frustrated here. Over the past few months in the anti-Semitism article user:Simonides has been consistently censoring opinions with which he disagrees. As far as I can tell 5 or six editors have had it out with him already, but he appears to have worn them down through sheer intransigence. What can be done at this point? Hi Jfdwolff, Thank you very much for your contribution to the list.
The list of publication in medicine is part of an attempt to compile a list of publications in science. I'm sorry to admit that I have no knowledge in medicine. There for I just created the list as a seed, hoping that people with proper knowledge will improve it.

I try to write the list in a certain structure. Please try to use the same structure as me. Take a look of the editing I did to the list. The List_of_publications_in_computer_science is also a good example of that structure.

Since I don't have any medical knowledge I'm not sure that my description and importance classification are correct. I also don't know in which sub topic of medical to classify these publication. Can you take care of that?

I'll appreciate it very much if you will be able to extend the article or tell about it to other people practicing medicine.

Clubbing

Hello JFW. I'm not a doctor, but a medical student in 5th year now. Does that qualify me to join the clinical medicine project?

About the clubbing and emphysema: it always seems to be a contentious point. I have heard several consultants stress (and I've also read in several places) that clubbing is not associated with COPD, and another diagnosis should be considered, such as lung cancer. I don't know... Perhaps clubbing is a late change in severe emphysematous disease. Were the patients you saw at the end stages of the disease?

I have learned long ago that one can never win an argument with RK, because he hides behind personal attacks, rather than reading and understanding the sources he quotes. I stand by my very minor change of the page. Derech eretz does not mean "Gentile" knowledge. Other than that, I have given up on all of the Jewish articles and have decided to let the am-horatzim do what they want. All we have is a very biased view intended to make the Orthodox look like fundamentalists. Frankly, I am sick of it, but ich hob nisht kein koach for them any more. All the pictures there were done using Word! You can do a lot with basic tools and a bit of practice, although I do make adjustments with a bitmap editor after I've finished. I've just got a new computer at home and intend to invest in one of the older versions of [[[Coral Draw]] (cheaper) for it, but I'll still have to use Word when I'm at work. Style of medical articles

Thanks for the input re: rheumatoid arthritis. I intend to add more content. Regarding the organization, I have taken my cue from the classic textbooks of medicine, where, history, epidemiology and pathophysiology precede features and diagnosis. See my user:Mehrenberg for my template. I have modified this very little from the original template in the Clinical Medicine page.

I don't mind the WIKI version, if that is what everyone is going to edit it to anyway. However, there is some sense to my, or should I say, the classical organization of medical articles. It is only through understanding the epidemiology and causes of a disease that a diagnosis could be reached, or a disease process and manifestations understood. This is the Western, scientific method, of medical diagnosis and decision making. We seek the cause, and do not simply treat symptoms. Of course you know this. I don't mean to be pedantic. The history section precedes all in the classical organization, I think, to pay homage to the great scientific minds that precede us. It serves very little purpose in understanding a disease process.

I read your post on my talk page User_talk:Mehrenberg regarding medical article structure. I could compromise on history, because it is just an honor role section, but epidemiology should be prominent. It precedes features in understanding a disease. I would not even consider malaria as a diagnosis because I live and work in Northeastern United States, where malaria never occurs, unless there is a history of travel. This is an obvious example, but what about Chagas' disease, or leichmaniasis? If lay people are going to make sense of these illnesses, epidemiology needs to be prominent. I would be happy to move our discussion to the community, but I don't know how. If you could summarize or copy our debate, to date, I would be grateful Mehrenberg 12:23, Aug 8, 2004 (UTC)

They didn't get deleted. They are so old that they are from a time that userspace was not separate from article space. Redirects were temporarily implemented to connect from one to the other and in order to remove these without broken links the "user:" has to be inserted for talk pages where the signature was prior to userspace creation. Hi JW,

I'm sporadically busy - I do a run of 7x12 hour shifts then get seven days off.. alternating day and night shifts. Its pretty interesting stuff although far too many 80yo's on vents for my liking. I'll have a go at ARDS sometime soon.

Sometimes I think it'd be nice to be an admin... and then I think "am I nuts?" I enjoy chipping in a bit when I can. WP:DWDAE has been a fine little project to nudge along - the hanging troll polls were more than I could stomach - although I've been disapointed by the response. I admit I handle rejection badly and felt quite cheered up when Jimbo voted in favour - clearly a bright man ;-)

Nevertheless, RK has (e.g. on Samson Raphael Hirsch) maintained that Hirsch and Soloveitchik are two sides of the same coin, something I take strong issue with. Again, I'll see what I can do. I don't think that Samson Rapahel Hirsch and Joseph Soloveitchik are identical, or would have agreed on every issue. However, I want to make clear that the points I added to the articles on these rabbis are not original ideas from me; they are based on numerous articles and letters to the editors in Orthodox Jewish journals (e.g. the articles currently referenced in the articles.) I have no problem with noting that a controversy over their views and impact exist, and I do not expect or desire that only one person's POV be represented. RK 19:05, Aug 13, 2004 (UTC)

Kabbalah Center

You may wan to see the new article on the Kabbalah Center, the pseudo-yeshiva being led by former insurance agent Feivel Gruberger, who now claims to be "Rabbi Philip Berg".

There is a lengthy and carefully referenced article about him and his work called The Truth about the Kabbalah Centre which I got a photocopy of. It was published by the Task Force on Cults and Missionaries, Los Angeles, CA in 1995. A few years ago I wrote an article for a local newspaper on this issue, and tried to get permission to print the article. Despite letters and phone calls, I was unable to track down anyone who directly held copyright to it; the people who sent me the article from LA told me that I was free to publish the entire article, or parts therein, and that they could not provide me with copyright information or the name of the author. They allow others to post the entire article on their website, notably Rick Ross, an anti-cult educator. I suspect that the author or authors of this article want to avoid being sued, and wish that this material be widely distributed, and are deliberately letting this article pass into the public domain. Myocardial infarction edits

In general I agree with your changes. I felt it was important to mention the overwhelmingly dominant mechanism producing ischemic and infarct episodes near the top and to mention that such changes were quite visible within the angiogram image on the page. It has been my experience that too many of the lay public, including those suffering obvious consequences, do not grasp (to their detriment with respect to understanding better treatment strategies) the connection between the underlying atherosclerosis process and the end stage events which suddenly occur. To many remain fixated on the stenosis concept, which can produce symptons, yet is not responsibe for most myocardial infarction events. You left these two key issues at the top, I concur. MAlvis.

Handling of Common Engineering Notations?

I ventured, given my use, into an X-Ray tube definition, combining a little history, medical, physics, and engineering perspectives. One problem was handling common electrical engineering terminology, e.g. see the KV for Kilovolt entry on the X-Ray tube page. Common engineering notation is based on the 10 to the 3rd power, both plus and minus exponents. Does the Wikipedia organization have any established policy and support for this notation? It expect it would be useful to writers and the general public.

I don't think it would be good to generate chemical formulas automatically. They often don't look aesthetically. And every database has mistakes, so one should check the structure from more sources, as I do. I took a look on your structures you wanted to be checked by me.. so it seems Rosiglitazone and Pioglitazone have swapped formulas; and Troglitazone has in your version about one carbon longer chain (you can make sure here and there). Your Statins are chemically (not aesthetically :]) correct except from Fluvastatin which should have indole cycle, but has dihydroindole; and should have -CH=CH- group instead of the strange -C=CH(OH)-. The last note - all statins are chiral compounds with defined stereochemistry. It would be nice to have included those wedged and dashed bonds to see the configuration on the asymmetric centers. haemophilia vs hemophilia

Why are you moving all the haemophilia pages to the UK spelling? The articles are not in British English at all, so I would suggest you adapt the spelling to suit the title, or move them back. (Please note that Wikipedia uses both spellings, as long as articles are consistently in one spelling.)

You're right, it does. However, there was something quite silly about having the haemophilia title with one spelling and the article with the other. I renamed hemophlia accordingly, and the A, B and C accordingly. I'll concede that hemophilia seems more common, but the 'ae' version seems to be more common here. Arno 00:34, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)

stroke volume and cardiac output

Good for finding duplication, a technical difficulty with the Wiki engine, however I believe you also threw out some significant practical issues which Ksheka does not cover. My focus was based, beyond the engineering level assessment (been there, done that), more on principles and ratios which I have found, from extensive clinical experience that most physicians, much less the public, don't grasp. Yet they are fairly easy to lay out, are grasped more quickly and are of more practical use to patients. Transferring deletions to the applicable user talk page, rather than tossing them, would probably be a better strategy. -- MAlvis

Igor needs to be banned. Not only is this person pushing holocaust denial and Nazi websites and propaganda, he is clearly trying to trash Wikipedia. OMIM

I like the OMIM tags. Unfortunately, they have created a bit of a format and intelligibility problems in the CAH table. Because the larger OMIM tags forced a shift of column size, the precursors and products are not longer connected by the arrows, and many of the compounds have been broken into 2 lines. Compare the two farthest right columns of the table before you inserted the tags and the new one, and you will see what I mean. I don't know whether just abbreviating number to no. would allow them to readjust but that would require changing your tag. Any thoughts or fixes? Alteripse 21:59, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

But then how does the content ever get fixed? Your sh'tika may make you a hochom but it allows the amarotsim to create nonsense, undermining the integrity of Wikipedia, the project you hold dear. Templates

The limit of 5 of a particular template is intentional and due to performance concerns. The performance problem could be worked around, but as far as I know, has not been. Given that most prior complaints about the limitation have been from people "misusing" templates, I think the developers didn't really see any need to work on fixing it. -- Cyrius|✎ 16:18, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

As you noticed, I'm not a medic; I'm a french first aid instructor (moniteur, the french instructeur is above a moniteur). As the basic knowledge is very low (10h for the basic training, the additionnal 60h to become instructor are mostly pedagogy) —and it has to be to be accessible to untrained people— I have tomake a lot of efforts to understand the medical articles I read for my culture; and I try use the understanding effort to explain as clearly as possible the few things I catch.

Concerning the Clinical medicine project, I already participated to a discussion.

uh uh, no real experience in traumatology. I'm a volunteer first aider (certified first responder level), and perform only preventive first aid post for cultural and sporting events. Most of our time is spent sitting, waiting for an accident that fortunately rarely happens (we in fact act as filter and avoid saturation of the emergency services due to light wounds). We of course train to act on severe trauma just in case, but in France, most major trauma happen on the road, not in cultural events... Cdang 08:08, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
