Earls of Callendar
[edit]The man who carried the title of Lord Livingston was known as "Lord Livingston of Callendar" The sources on the internet are confused about when the title Earl of Callendar was granted and to which Lord Livingston.
Some sources say the title was created at the same time as that of the Earl of Linlithgow, others that it was granted to the 2nd Earl of Linlithgow in 1641 by Charles I. So either the titles run concurrently or they are staggared by one: 2nd Earl of Linlighgow, 1st Earl of Callendar 3rd Earl of Linlithgow, 2nd Earl of Callendar 4nd Earl of linlithgow, 3rd Earl of Callendar 5th Earl of Linlithgow, 4th Earl of Callendar (forfeit 1716)
Or it is possible that the title went to the younger son of Alexander Livingstone, 2nd Earl of Linlithgow. See this source Alexander Livingstone, 2nd Earl of Linlithgow (b. before 1594, d. from 11 June 1648 to 10 December 1648) and Alexander Livingston, 2nd Earl of Callendar (b. before 1648, d. August 1685). This internet site claims a source of "Mosley, Charles, editor. Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, 106th edition, 2 volumes. Crans, Switzerland: Burke's Peerage (Genealogical Books) Ltd, 1999." if it is correct the the dates on this article are suspect. It also gives these dates grandfather: Alexander Livingstone, 1st Earl of Linlithgow (b. b 1569 d. 24 Dec 1621)
Another source states "Alexander Livingstone, 3rd Earl of Callendar, d. ... Dec. 1692"
So if someone could sort out who and what the Callendar earldom is I would appreciate it because some refrences to the English Civil War talk about the "Earl of Callendar" without naming who it is and I would like to put in the correct link :-) ---Philip Baird Shearer 10:37, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- Perhaps I can sort out who and what the Callendar earldom is for you, if there is still confusion.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 22:06, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
