History info
[edit]The history info that has been recently added to this page comes from The City of Vaughan website. I this may be a copyright violation. Spstarr 03:41, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Actually it comes from a few different sources, one of them being the City of Vaughan website (two others being the Thornhill Historic website and the area profile by the city's economic development department). If any of the text has been copied verbatim, you can remove it but I don't ever remember reading on the FAQs and such that paraphrasing historical information was considered copyright infringement. -This article is inaccurate about ethnic demographics-
[edit]While Thornhill has played host to a large Jewish community for a couple of decades, the statement that the population is over 50% Jewish is inaccurate. While the article stated that 50% of the population is Jewish, the source it cited stated that there was a percentage point over 50% in Thornhill (Vaughan) -- only the Vaughan side which constitutes around 55% of the population. Furthermore, I have not been about to substantiate the claims in the original source cited which claimed ~51% of the Thornhill Vaughan were Jewish, therefore I have modified the sentence from "approximately 50% of the population are Jewish[3]" to "perhaps 50% of the population in the Vaughan portion of Thornhill are Jewish[3]".. even that should be researched and fixed. "It is home to significant Persian and Korean communities" - I'm changing it to Persian and Chinese because there are way more Chinese who reside in Thornhill than Korean.
To whoever's doing this, please stop changing Chinese into Korean...so pathetic... If you have a problem with the stats then go to the government website & check for yourself. Most Chinese reside on the east side of Younge St. though.
Ok, I've posted the edited article with the link attached (from StatsCan). Apparently, the Chinese population in Thornhill accounts for almost 11% and is the biggest minority group in Thornhill. The Korean population is only about 2.3% of the total Thornhill population. http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census01/products/standard/fedprofile/RetrieveTable.cfm?R=FED96&G=35085
- A few points. First, the article, as it exists right now, confuses the concept of ethnicity and religion. One can be both Jewish and Chinese, for example. Second, the StatsCan profile linked above is for Thornhill electoral district, which has boundaries somewhat different from the town's. It is nonetheless the best source for demographic info we have, though we should refer to the 2006 data, not 2001. (The riding grew by about 15,000 residents in that time. See this. I can't seem to find data for 2006 census of 2003 representation order for the districts, though, only the 2001 census for 2003 order.) In many articles in WP, we have a "top 5" or "top 10", in absolute terms, for ethnicities and religions represented. We could do that here too. Mindmatrix 20:08, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- One can be Jewish and Chinese? To which planet are you referring? Because Jewish and Chinese is an extremely exotic and very rare circumstance. Jewish most normally refers to ethnicity, and very rarely religion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.187.31.135 (talk) 07:14, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oops, missed this back in January. You're right, my example was contrived, but it is possible. I think it's more accurate to say "Jewish" describes an ethnoreligious group, instead of just a religious one. Mindmatrix 13:51, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Ya, but neither "Chinese" or "Korean" are religions such as Jewish. In fact in the 01 data, Jewish was listed as a religion (I didn't write the Jewish part on this page). I tried to find the most recent data too but couldn't. However, the demographic of the area shouldn't varied much. I will try to keep looking for the most recent stats. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.141.77.145 (talk) 05:08, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think we'll find anything at StatsCan, at least not for the unincorporated community. Unfortunately, the town of Markham doesn't have demographic data split by communities, and Vaughan's data seems outdated (they have 1996 data, some 2001 data, and a bunch of projections that are increasingly inaccurate, since they were based on the 1996 and 2001 data.) Perhaps they've squirreled away some data in hard copy at their libraries. One other option is to go through StatsCan census tract population data, and generate totals from there (by postal code, for example). Here's an example report for the postal code L4C 2C4. It seems to exclude religion data; this document suggests that religion data is collected every other census (see page 39, table 2.13), so we may have to rely on 2001 data until the 2011 census data is released (probably in early 2013). Notable people from Thornhill
[edit]Lists of notable <x> people usually should include references for each person. (That they are from Thornhill as well as notable.) Granted that it'll be rare that anyone contests an entry here or adds a joke name, but sometimes these lists stray into WP:BLP territory. AndroidCat (talk) 04:58, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Corey Haim did in fact live in Thornhill Ontario before becoming famous. The reason I know this is because I went to school with him.--174.95.63.5 (talk) 15:02, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- Find a reference that supports this, and we'll be happy to accept his name to the list. Are you sure he lived in Thornhill, as opposed to just going to school there? PKT(alk) 18:53, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I am certain that at some point he lived in Thornhill. Haim went to several schools when before leaving the Greater Toronto Area for Hollywood, & at least 2 of them were in Thornhill(I believe it was more than just 2 actually). They were Baythorn Public School, and German Mills Public School (which was the school I knew him from).
Also, the PO Box for donations to Judy Haim, for Corey Haim's funeral is in Thornhill. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/12/corey-haims-mom-seeks-don_n_497441.html--174.95.63.5 (talk) 01:40, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Corey Haim lived around the corner from me on Simonston Blvd (he lived on Grenada Court)and went to my Public School, German Mills. He was one year older than me and shared a drama teacher with me. He was and always was a hero of our town. We were always proud of him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.15.67.139 (talk) 02:56, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Coyote problem
[edit]Is the scope if the "coyote problem" WP:DUE for an article like this? Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 14:10, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
- The text originally implied that coyotes were a problem throughout Thornhill, but having reviewed (and improved) the references, coyotes appear to be a problem centred on a particular neighbourhood. I have updated the text based on the references. I would say let it stand for now, and if the issue doesn't become worse then delete it. Thornhill has several areas of natural terrain, and wildlife near those areas could become more of an issue. PKT(alk) 16:05, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
