This category contains writing systems which use syllabaries, in which each symbol or grapheme represents a consonant and a vowel, or only a vowel, in some cases followed by a consonant or tone. For other writing systems which share some of the characteristics of syllabary systems, see Category:Abugida writing systems (systems where symbols represent consonants, but the symbols are varied depending on the following vowel), and Category:Abjad writing systems (systems where symbols represent consonants, and vowel marking is absent or optional).

This categorization follows the classification introduced by Peter T. Daniels (b.1951).
